Outside of the Luther Vandross version of the same song (Download luther_vandross_superstar.mp3)I’d say Sonic Youth’s ”Superstar” is the most rad and poignant Carpenters cover.

when the carpenters covers cd came out in the late 80's richard carpenter was interviewed in entertainment weekly and said he and karen weren't sure they could do as good a job on 'superstar' as the bette midler original, and i thought, what a dick, he, of all people, should know that rita coolidge first sang it on the joe cocker 'mad dogs and englishman' lp. jeez.
