Wednesday's Cocktail: Swine Flu and ManBearPig Flu Shots

Cinco de Mayo and H1N1 intersected for some topical pun humor, and the inspiration for a couple good excuses to do tequila shots on a Tuesday night. Over at Casita in Shoreditch Will Foster was pouring his Swine Flu Shot:

SWINE FLU SHOT

1/2 shot Arette blanco tequila
1/2 shot Pink grapefruit juice (pink for pigs!)
Tabasco to taste (one drop thoroughly permeates an entire shot, so proceed judiciously)
Tiny dash agave syrup
Squeeze lime wedge

shake and strain

Back in Williamsburg at Dressler Mark Buettler made a batch of Foster's Swine Flu Shot,  and was inspired to mix up a batch of a new tequila number he'd been working on,  and suddenly we were shooting something named in honor of Al Gore's imaginary monster nemesis, ManBearPig.

MANBEARPIG FLU SHOT

For 2-3 shots
2 oz. Blanco tequila
1/2 Lime juice
1/2 Aperol
1/2 Tamarind syrup
Dash rhubarb bitters
Shake, strain into shot glasses.

Friday Night Cocktail: The Perfect Louis

Mark Buettler from Dressler again, this time with a brilliant cocktail that he created. A riff on the Perfect Manhattan, this one using bourbon (hence the Louis-ville), organic honey syrup and the elusive celery bitters. Quite possibly the best new cocktail I've tasted in the past year. Mark makes his own celery bitters from scratch, but Bitter Truth does them, which makes preparation considerably simpler-although it does help if you read German for ordering them online. The fellas at Brooklyn Barmen have 'em, and no German required.

PERFECT LOUIS (By Mark Buettler)

1 oz Bourbon (Mark prefers Old Forresters)
1 oz Dry Vermouth
1 oz Sweet Vermouth
1/2 oz White Honey syrup (equal parts white honey and hot water)
2 dashes Angustora bitters
2 dashes Celery bitters
Stir 30-35 times, Strain up, No garnish

THE BROOKLYN (DRESSLER STYLE)

1/2 oz Luxardo maraschino liqueur
1/2 oz Amer picon
1oz Antica sweet vermouth
2 oz Wild Turkey 101 rye

Stir, strain up, flamed orange peel garnish
