Another group of desperate ex-pats and sympathizers huddled together in the soothing darkness of a bar and fellow devout football fans. Australians and their sidekicks showed up for the game against Ghana on a beautiful sunny Saturday in New York City, taking refuge in the basement bar below 8 Mile Creek, The Creek Bar Downstairs. A beer I drank a lot while in Australia recently, Cooper's Pale Ale, was on special for $5 a pint, but the more special aspect is more that they're the first in New York to carry the Belgian style ale on tap.
Another unsatisfying draw saw a number of bemused Aussies filing quietly out, post game, in subdued mode rather than the preferred rowdy. The combined bar & restaurant is a bit of a maze, with this crazy garden in the back. Arrive early to get a spot out there for the June 23rd Aus/Serbia match at 2 pm.
