New Orleans' Jazz & Heritage station WWOZ recently launched an iPhone app that enables listeners to stream the station through cellular networks. Which means you're able to walk about the streets of New York City listening to New Orleans radio on your headphones. A little Allen Toussaint on a snow-covered Manhattan boulevard on a Sunday morning takes away the sting of winter. The app also has an alarm so you can awaken to some sweet Southern soul, or listen to the rare groove feast that is Soul Power with Soul Sister show on Saturday evenings (8-10 p.m. CST) wherever you are. Available on Apple's App Store.
If you caught the new cable network Centric's "Soul Train: The Hippest Trip in America" you might have seen WWOZ regular Al Green's truly transcendent 974 performance on the show. Don Cornelius' intro here might seem a little over the top with its praise, but sit back and take in the whole performance and you'll be calling green "Messiah", too. The man has his arm in a sling (a very fashionable sling) and he moves like an angel. Other less high-quality recordings of songs from this stellar performance include "Here I Am" (unbelievably funky) and "Living for You".
