In the wine world it is said that there are Wednesday wines and Sunday wines. The Wednesdays are more casual and affordable and the Sundays are the more expensive "occasion" wines. At Embury, Wednesday Wine is where Food and Wine Editor Stuart Krimko discusses his favorite bottles under $15.
Chateau Belingard, Bergerac 2006
It’s not always easy to find wine that tastes like wine, but it’s what you want in an inexpensive bottle. The elusive tautology can only be achieved by humble winemakers who recognize that the earth they’re farming or the higher yields they’re getting from their vines aren’t going to be the stuff of masterpieces, and who don’t take their thirsty audiences for fools. Dry, black-fruited, grippy, this Bergerac knows what it is, a little wine from the southwest of France, a wine made from Bordeaux-blend grapes (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and in this case not a little Cabernet Franc), a wine designed to drink with hanger steak or, in my case, shewarma from the local felafel joint. I love cheap Bordeaux-style wine with shewarma. $8.99 at Astor Wine and Chelsea Wine Vault. S.K.
