(Editor's Note: Arlo Haskell, a new contributor here, did get his piece in on time to run on Monday, but the photo department was running around until just this moment trying to find a coconut in New York City--tougher than you might imagine. A cruel paradox of drinking too much is how thirsty it leaves you the next day. Commercial sports beverages like Gatorade re-hydrate your body better than water partly because they are isotonic, meaning they contain essential salts and minerals in the same concentration as in your body. This makes them ideal for replenishing fluids lost to vigorous, uh, exercise. Coconut water– faintly sweet, slightly metallic, and cloudy– is even more effective, the tree-borne super-beverage Gatorade wishes it could be.
Compared to Gatorade, the naturally isotonic liquid from the nut of cocos nucifera contains five times as much vitamin C, four times as much iron, seventeen times as much potassium, and eight times as much manganese. It also contains healthy doses of calcium, riboflavin, and magnesium. Drinking a pint or two of coconut water will quickly and effectively rehydrate your body and settle your stomach, restoring your digestive system’s normal functioning and enriching your depleted bloodstream with important minerals. Now, about that headache…
