Last summer I visited Covenant Wines in St. Helena and had a sort of magical lunch in a farmhouse overlooking their vineyards, on top of the hills dividing Napa Valley from the cool ocean air. The wines are handled from start to finish by observant Jews and made in a classic Napa style, if you will, meaning that they're both light, lovely and perfectly kosher. Jeff Morgan (at right) and his wife Jodie hosted some big ticket guests of the Napa Valley Wine Auction (and me) for this charmed afternoon, where we sipped their ripe but restrained 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and the light, citrus and fig-rich Lavan Chardonnay. If you've got a seder dinner this week, these are the bottles to bring. But Passover's not required for these lovely wines that stand easily on their own. At around $99 the Cabernet isn't cheap, but you are guaranteed to make a splash when you bring it to a holiday dinner. At Astor Wines & Spirits here.
Simple & ingenious method for chilling wine without getting it wet.
Yes, that Chardonnay tastes as good as it looks.
So glad you enjoyed that lunch. We did too! Loved the photos. Come back and see us....and bring your friends!
This year, for Auction Napa Valley, we're making dinner at our house down in the valley. Those who are interested need to sign up with the Napa Valley Vintners sooner than later. Only 8 guests.
Happy Passover! Jeff Morgan
